archivefilm, broadcast and signage · 2021 to 2023
Brand films, drone work, hard news and retail LED.
Everything here was made between 2021 and 2023, running a production studio and editing at CNN International at the same time. Most of it plays on this page. The broadcast work links out to where it was published, and every piece names the people who made it with me.
01glassblok
Brand films, drone work and campaigns.
glassblok is the production studio I ran alongside the CNN job. Brand films, profiles and FPV drone flying, which is how the ICARE factory got filmed the way it did. Most of these play here rather than on YouTube.
The campaign work I did with Carbon in the same period is further down.

02retail signage
Content cut for a wall you walk past.
In-store LED for a health and beauty chain: skincare, cosmetics, vitamins, health and wellness, personal care and hair care, delivered in English and Chinese.
The formats run from 2432 by 256 pixels up to 8960 by 256. That last one is thirty-five to one. A shape like that is its own discipline: the viewer is moving, they see roughly a metre of it at a time, and anything that needs a second line has already lost them. You design the whole ribbon and then check whether any single stretch of it still works alone.

03carbon
Campaign work with Carbon.
Separate from glassblok, and a different job. On the first two I was executive producer: bringing creative direction, production management and post together rather than shooting it myself. On the third I flew.

The Rescue of Parwana
A nine-year-old girl in Afghanistan, sold into marriage by a family who could not feed her. CNN followed the story until she was taken to safety. I was one of two video editors on the two-part feature, with Alex Dicker.
It is the piece I would point at if you only had time for one. Not for the awards: for the fact that a story assembled correctly, at that length, on that deadline, changed what happened to somebody.
Alex Dicker
The Emmy was awarded to the feature. My credit on it is video editor, shared with Alex Dicker.
05cnn international
Features, hard news and long-form, 2021 to 2023.
Half-hour feature shows, documentaries and breaking news, plus directing live broadcasts from the control room. Editing is a credited role in television, which is why every line below names who else was on it.

why it is herewhat a newsroom teaches you about documents
A news package and a board deck have the same problem.
Somebody has to understand a complicated thing, in order, in a fixed amount of time, with one pass and no chance to ask a question.
Television teaches that in a way agency work does not, because the deadline is absolute and the audience leaves the moment they are bored. You learn to find the through-line before you touch a timeline, to cut the shot you love when it does not carry the argument, and to put the answer near the front. All three transfer directly to a document somebody has to read alone, on a screen, with nobody there to explain it.
Same discipline, on your document.
Nine questions, about ninety seconds. You get a price range and a date at the end of it.
